The red close button in your mac window title bar doesn’t actually quits the application, unlike Windows where the Close button quits the application and removes the files from memory. That’s the reason why Mac OS X users need to quit application from system menu bar or alternatively use command-Q hotkey combination. It closes all the instances of the program in question and its open windows just by clicking the red button on the top-left of the window.
